After A While

April is National Poetry Month.  I am dedicating this poem to my beautiful daughters who have had suffered so much loss this past year.  They are strong women who are dealing with much besides the loss of their dearly beloved sister.  This poem speaks to me about them and all they are learning.

After A While You Learn
By Veronica A. Shoffstall

After a while you learn
The subtle difference between
Holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t always mean security.
And you begin to learn
That kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes ahead
With the grace of a woman
Not the grief of a child
And you learn
To build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow’s ground is
Too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way
Of falling down in mid- flight
After a while you learn
That even sunshine burns if you get too much
So you plant your own garden
And decorate your own soul
Instead of waiting
For someone to bring you flowers
And you learn
That you really can endure
That you are really strong
And you really do have worth
And you learn and you learn
With every good bye you learn.

  1. Beautiful poem! (A patient who had struggled a lot in life and in therapy gave that poem to me in a frame when she was finishing treatment. I have it on my desk as a reminder of her and of the struggles we all face.) Thank you for sharing it today! And my thoughts are with you and your daughters as you continue to grow and live with your heartbreaking loss.

  2. My daughter is just home from a weekend women's retreat. It was very helpful to her, and I'm so thankful for that. I'm glad you posted this poem. It has long been a favorite of mine. I'm sending it to her. I think it will help her, also.

Perhaps helping my Terri with her struggle will, in one way, honor your Julie on this birthday anniversary.

    Peace.

  7. This is truly a beautiful poem. I've never seen it before and it truly speaks from and to the heart. We do have much to learn and with each day I see how much more there is to grow. With all that you have suffered, you are teaching us how to learn and grow, Sally. Julie's tree certainly bloomed quickly. I hope its beauty will always keep Julie's spirit close to you.

  18. Gorgeous poem with so much heartfelt meaning; I am sorry about the loss of your daughter --but oh, how wonderful that the tree bloomed on her birthday.. She's talking to you and your daughters --saying that she is fine now. I pray that all of you will remember the good times and begin this coming year with lots of happiness knowing that you have each other...

    May God Bless You.

  25. It's hard to say which is more beautiful - the poem or your daughters (actually, I'd go with the girls). I know this must be a hard time for you all, and hope you find comfort in each other's company and the sweet pink blossoms of Julie's tree. Sending hugs, prayers and blessings your way.
